Fr. Spannagel was born on October 30, 1976, in Effingham, Illinois and ordained to the priesthood on May 24, 2003. In his early years as a priest, Fr. Spannagel served as a Parochial Vicar at several parishes, including Sts. Peter & Paul in Nauvoo, Immaculate Conception in Carthage, Sacred Heart Mission in Dallas City, and St. Mary Mission in West Point. 

In 2007, Fr. Spannagel assumed the role of Assistant Chaplain at St. John Chapel in Champaign. His journey led him to become the Director of the St. Francis of Assisi Newman Center in Macomb, where he played a pivotal role in nurturing the spiritual growth of university students.

In 2010, he took on the role of Administrator at St. Patrick in Raritan, and in 2014, Fr. Spannagel became the Chaplain of St. John's Catholic Newman Center in Champaign. He has also served as Pastor at St. Patrick in Urbana and St. Mary and Sacred Heart in Rock Island. In June 2022, he began his special assignment as a parochial vicar at the Cathedral of St. Mary, Sacred Heart, St. Bernard, and St. Joseph in Peoria, with residence at St. Philomena.
