Sophia's Kitchen

Inspired by the spirit of St. Francis and under the pastoral leadership of Sacred Heart/St. Joseph Parish, this mission is an outward expression of our Catholic beliefs.

Volunteers make hundreds of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches daily. The rest of the menu varies day by day as God provides. Local grocery stores and restaurants donate liberally to help provide filling and nutritious food.

  • Sophia's Kitchen is in need of adult volunteers to wash dishes. Help is needed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, for a once weekly, 4 hour shift. It's great to do with a friend, so apply together!

  • Please consider supporting our mission.  To donate with electronically click here: DONATE

Sophia’s Kitchen is located next to Historic St. Joseph Church, 103 Richard Pryor Place in Peoria.  Sophia's Kitchen is staffed by a dedicated group of volunteers, who give generously of their time so that no one goes hungry.  Donations are accepted Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 3 PM.

Pekin Community High School student Gracie Kizer was excited to learn about a grant that would make it possible to purchase face masks for children. From her work at Sophia's Kitchen, she'd witnessed children coming to eat with no mask or poor fitting masks designed for adults. Through the Love Like Lija Foundation, she was able to obtain a grant and design a comfortable mask that would appeal to kids so they would be more likely to wear one.

The Love Like Lija Foundation exists to fund projects demonstrating care, kindness, and compassion to people in need, performed by organizations, individuals and small groups with priority being given to young people providing the acts of care, kindness, and compassion.

Thank you, Gracie and , for caring!
