Inspired by the spirit of St. Francis and under the pastoral leadership of Sacred Heart/St. Joseph Parish, this mission is an outward expression of our Catholic beliefs.
Volunteers make hundreds of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches daily. The rest of the menu varies day by day as God provides. Local grocery stores and restaurants donate liberally to help provide filling and nutritious food.
Every year, we honor an outstanding volunteer with our Golden Sandwich Award.
Our Golden Sandwich Award winner is one of the most thoughtful people I know. Everything she does is done with great contemplation and seriousness. She listens carefully and completely. In the days of COVID, her decisions to volunteer at Sophia’s Kitchen were carefully thought out. She was acutely aware that in serving the poorest of Peoria, she was putting herself at great risk of catching the virus, and yet, there she was, packing groceries and giving away bags of food. When we reopened, and most of our volunteers were still not able to return, she stepped up and served almost every day. No task was beyond her capabilities. She chopped vegetables, took out the garbage, washed the dishes and served meals. And as other volunteers began to come back, with grace she stepped back from some days to allow others to serve.
It is with great pride and admiration that we announce the winner of the Golden Sandwich Award of 2021 to be
Jane Seiler Congratulations, Jane! We are so blessed to have you serving at Sophia's Kitchen
brother and sister, marylu and Jim Bowman
Our 2nd and 3rd place winners are brother and sister, Marylu and Jim Bowman. With quiet dedication, they make sure all the kitties, rabbits and puppies have food, treats and toys every Thursday afternoon. Volunteer Bev Golianis initiated this program several years ago, and as she needed to step back, the Bowman’s have come forward to continue her good works. When they aren’t giving away pet food, they are making sure the kitchen stays neat and garbage free. We know the trash cans and recycling will be emptied as soon as they arrive. Marylu and Jim, we are so glad you are willing to greet guests and take care of things other people might overlook!
If you would like to show your appreciation to Marylu and Jim, donations of cat and dog food are always appreciated, as well as gallon size baggies used to make individual portions.
