Join Us in Serving the Hungry at Sophia's Kitchen

If you feel a calling in your heart to make a difference and serve those less fortunate, we welcome you to be part of our mission at Sophia's Kitchen. Your willingness to serve will be a reward in heaven.

At Sophia's Kitchen, our mission can be summed up in a single word: NOURISH. We are dedicated to providing nourishment for both the bodies and souls of those who are hungry, following the teachings of God's Holy Church.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering at Sophia’s Kitchen is a rewarding experience, and we invite you to join us in serving the homeless, unemployed, and underemployed in Peoria. Here's what you need to know:

  • When: We serve from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with 200 to 700 hungry individuals seeking nutritious meals daily.
  • Time Commitment: While we prefer a commitment to one 4-hour shift per week, we can accommodate occasional or one-time experiences.
  • Requirements: To be a Sophia's volunteer, you should be at least 12 years old, willing to follow health department rules, respectful of Catholic teachings, and have no peanut butter allergies. You should also be able to stand for at least 2 hours and lift up to 10 lbs.
  • Training: All volunteers must attend a two-hour Safe Environment training session before serving.
  • Groups: We welcome groups for one-time special projects on weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., but please schedule your event at least 4 weeks in advance.
  • Safety and Peace: Our secure facility is staffed with trained personnel who emphasize safety and maintain a peaceful environment.

Roles for Volunteers

There are various roles at Sophia's Kitchen, and you'll be placed where you are most comfortable, but you may be asked to fill in if needed:

  • Kitchen Help: Assist in making sandwiches, chopping vegetables, and maintaining cleanliness. Ideal for those who enjoy social interactions.
  • Dishwasher: Operate power tools to sanitize kitchen equipment. A more solitary role.
  • Window Worker: Distribute food and drinks to clients. Requires standing and interacting with clients.
  • Spiritual Center: Lead prayers, interact with clients, read stories, and share your faith.
